Rabbit virus resources

For monthly reports on test results nationwide, go to the CSIRO RHDV website

According to ongoing CSIRO research, outdoor housing and outdoor play time is not recommended for any pet rabbits in Australia due to high rates of rabbit calcivirus (RHDV) and myxomatosis that are present nationwide. High levels are maintained by the government for pest control.

The RHDV1-K5 variant was last released March 1, 2025 in New South Wales. Other variants and myxomatosis are regularly confirmed nationwide. Make sure your rabbit is vaccinated every year.

If you live in Australia and your rabbit experiences a sudden death, email rabbitcalicivirus@csiro.au for free testing. Testing is critical to protecting your local rabbit community.
